Tokyo Olympics from four perspectives: 4. Tokyo Metropolitan Government

The next perspective is from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government.  *Please note that all perspectives are imaginations based on true circumstances or events. -------------------------------------------------- The city of Tokyo is very excited about the Tokyo Olympics for various reasons. First, it will be a great opportunity to show Japan (or Tokyo, specifically) to the world. We are very proud of our public transportation (especially trains), and some tourists from foreign countries said our multi-language speaking vending machines were unique. Also, we are planning to create the medals by collecting precious metal from used smartphones. Second, we are expecting positive economic effects by hosting the Olympics. With more people visiting, there will be more consumption and employment. It will also be a great chance to dispel the reputational damage of Fukushima. And finally, we are looking forward for more people to enjoy sports. Many people lack exercise these days, so it wo

Tokyo Olympics from four perspectives: 3. tourist from America

The next perspective is from a tourist from America. *Please note that all perspectives are imaginations based on true circumstances or events. -------------------------------------------------- I'm a tourist from America, and I'm planning to visit Japan again in 2020 to watch the Olympic games, and also go sight-seeing around Tokyo. From my first visit, I felt that Japan is a relatively safe country with various types of public transportation, so I'm not so concerned about my next trip, but I do have some things that I'd prefer it changed so that I can have the best experiences. One important suggestion; they should write the public signs in English, and NOT in Japanese in Roman Letters. For example, there is a station called Shinjuku-sanchoume. If you are not a Japanese speaker, you probably won't be able to understand what "sanchoume" means. So, I would like it if all of it is translated, like, "Shinjuku 3rd Street" so that it&#

Tokyo Olympics from four perspectives: 2. printing company

The next perspective is from a worker in a printing company.  *Please note that all perspectives are imaginations based on true circumstances or events. -------------------------------------------------- I work at a printing company, which could be at risk of bankruptcy because of the Tokyo Olympics. The games will be held in many various existing sites, such as the Tokyo Big Site, Makuhari Messe, Saitama Super Arena, Yokohama Stadium, Tokyo International Forum, etc, and at Tokyo Big Site alone, more than 500 events are held annually. These events include business display and negotiation (where it is estimated that 3 trillion yen are being dealt in total), and also the famous Comic Market and other fan events. Because my company specializes in printing dojinshi (magazines created by fans), if the events get canceled due to the Olympics, our main source of income will be lost. Plus, there is no substitute sites in the Greater Tokyo Area,  because most of them is occupied f

Tokyo Olympics from four perspectives: 1. company worker in Tokyo

There are many opinions about the Tokyo Olympic controversies, from positive to negative, or neither. Some are looking forward for it, others are worried or totally disagree with having the games in Tokyo, and of course, there are many other voices as well. In this post and the following three posts, I will introduce you to four different voices by stepping into their shoes, based on some background information.    The perspectives I will present are: 1. company worker living in Tokyo (this post) 2. printing company 3. tourist from America 4. Tokyo Metropolitan Government -------------------------------------------------- I am a citizen of Tokyo, and I am not so enthusiastic about having the games in Tokyo. First, like the governor of Tokyo announced the other day, our taxes will be used. There are way too many other places to spend money on, like establishing more preschools, and ensuring pension. Second, since large number of people are expected to visit Tokyo,

Introduction of us and the topic

We are university students in Japan studying about controversial issues, and we chose the Tokyo Olympics as our topic.    There are many controversies relating to the up coming 2020 Tokyo Olympics. The committee holds numerous problems such as plagiarism, over budget, lack of sites, and so on. Although people have been longing for the Olympic games to be held in Tokyo again, the project is proceeding with difficulties since the project kicked in to gear after the announcement by the IOC.    We are going to focus on three specific controversies; safety, sites, and symbols, and will introduce and discuss about them from various perspectives. So, what do we need to get done before the games start? ------------------------------ posted by moe
